Yes, I got a job!

It’s been a while (once again)

15. september 2007 Inga kommentarer

I just did a small update to the site by adding a “Recently Played” last.fm widget in the sidebar - how cool is that! Upon doing so, I realized it’s been ages since I’ve been “home” and even noticed that I had two drafts that I had never posted. So you see, I did make some small attempts of being hip, but it just didn’t work out.

Well, there’s not much point in feeling sorry for what I’ve been doing (or should I say not been doing) since I bought this domain. As my military duties are finally over (they have been since early July) and I’m trying to find a job, I should re-do this place and put up a portfolio of some sort. I’m feeling the pressure just thinking about it!

Anyways, I’ve noticed this place is kind of pale and dull, so I really need to put some color in it. Maybe that’ll inspire me to write some interesting entries in my journal instead of this ****? We’ll see, if it ever comes to that. Until then, bye bye!

Ten weeks left

24. april 2007 Inga kommentarer

It’s been quite some time since I last wrote something in my journal and I don’t feel happy about it at all. My previous entry didn’t give such a good impression of my current state, so I thought I’d write I few lines to keep you all (haha!) up to date.

I’m still in the army and there’s about ten weeks of service left. I wanted to write on a regular basis about my adventures here in the Finnish defense force, but there’s not much to tell. In fact, I should start writing about something else, or this journal will eventually die, as is almost the case.

Well, next time I write, it should be about something interesting. Any suggestions? (haha!)

View from my bed at the hospital

Dear, oh dear. I haven’t been feeling very well the past two weeks. Everything started with a sore throat, and on Tuesday last week I went to the doctor to get it examined. I was released from outdoor duty the whole week and on Sunday I had developed a fever and was taken to the brigade hospital.

There seems to be some kind of virus on the loose at the the brigade right now, but luckily the situation seems to be under control. At another brigade, Porin prikaati, over half of the privates there had been infected by the flu!

I’m feeling much better now, and next week I can return to regular duty. There’s much more I could write about, but I think this is enough for now. Have a nice weekend!

A recruit no more

Yesterday, after almost four weeks of duty, it was time for me to become a Jäger. There was a big ceremony at the brigade, during which I and hundreds of other recruits took an oath to stay loyal to our country. In practice, this means that I now have an official military degree in the Finnish Defense Forces and it in turn brings brings more responsibility. Let’s hope everything goes well.

How did the week go, you ask? Well, Monday and Tuesday were spent in the forest and at the shooting range, and in between we slept in small sissiteltta. We were around ten men in a small tent, and each of us had to take turns to guard the fire in case it would go out. To make things worse, it was freezing cold! The rest of the week was less hectic; most of the time we practiced for the ceremony that was held on Saturday.

Oh yes, before I finish off: the contact form is now working, so you’re more than welcome to drop me a line if you want!

23 weeks to go

27. januari 2007 Inga kommentarer

Three weeks and I’m still alive! This past week has physically been the toughest, but I suppose also the most interesting. Winter has kicked in during the last couple of weeks, of course, so you can imagine how my fingers and toes have been feeling lately.

Monday and Thursday was spent on the shooting range, where we shot in different positions with the Rk 66 assault rifle, the standard weapon of choice in the Finnish Defense Forces. I’m not much of a shooter, but I think I did quite well from 50 meters and standing! Maybe I’ll do better now that I finally got my glasses.

We also did some training in the forest, where we learned how to take cover and move to safer grounds. In other words: running, sneaking, crawling and creeping in the snow with full fighting equipment! The third week was finished off with a muscle condition test, and I won’t even bother to mention how badly it went.

That’s all for now. Let’s hope I’ll survive the next week!

Home, sweet home

20. januari 2007 Inga kommentarer

I could never have imagined what a wonderful feeling it is to be back home, if only for a few days. Currently I’m on a weekend leave from the military and I’m taking the opportunity to relax a little after almost two weeks on duty.

The military is tough, both mentally and physically. Luckily, there are some really friendly people in my platoon, and that makes all the difference. I’d write something more detailed about my experiences during these first two weeks, but I’m too lazy and tired to do that right now. I might write something tomorrow if I’m up to it.

Also, on a completely different note, the contact form is still not working. I think I know what the problem is, but until I find the energy to fix it, please send me an e-mail personally. Thanks for stopping by!

Tah-dah!

7. januari 2007 Inga kommentarer

I’m having mixed emotions right now. As you can see, Scanactive has finally gotten its own feathers, and even though it’s a work in progress, I’m pretty satisfied with how it turned out. The layout will experience changes as time goes by, but I think this is a good start. There are also a few things “under the hood” that needs adjusting, but I’m sure no one will notice (other than me, that is!).

Tomorrow I’ll be joining up for military service. I’ll be spending at least 180 days in military training, so if everything goes well I’ll be a free man in July. I’ve been thinking about writing about my experiences during this time and publishing them in this journal, but who knows…

Anyways, I hope that the year 2007 will be a good one, and that I’ll find it in me to update my website more often. Hopefully you, my dear reader, will have a great year and please drop me a line so that I know if there actually are any of you out there!

God, I’m bad at this!

I just realised that I’m really lousy when it comes to updating this journal. There’s most certainly no one reading it anyway, but that doesn’t stop me from feeling like an idiot! Although it might not seem like it, I still have plans for this domain and I hope there will be more content in the near future.

Other than that? Summer is living its last days for the season and everyone are back to their regular schedules. Except for me. I’ve finished school and from now until the beginning of January I’ll have plenty of free time, as if that is any good. I work part-time, so I should probably start working more or do something else more creative (such as building this website!).

I’ll probably update this post with something better at a later time. Cheers!

I’m not dead yet

9. juni 2006 Inga kommentarer

This is my first actual post on my online journal. My initial idea was to wait until I had built an entirely new website for this domain name, but since that seems to be a constantly on-going idea I decided to put up a journal instead. This journal will eventually become part of the rest of my website as soon as I’ve actually made it.

I’m finally done writing on my thesis, which has taken me about two years to finish. This gives me some free time over the summer to work on this site and maybe, if time permits, on a forum I founded roughly a year ago. I have noticed that my inspiration is at an all-time low, so it might take some time before I have put something together.

One might wonder what this website is all about, and let me tell you: me and my ramblings. My initial idea was to start an independent web design company, but over the years I’ve come to realize that it isn’t something I’d ever get myself into. I’m still very interested in web development, and working on personal projects gets me atleast some kind of outlet for my so called skills.

I don’t know what I’ll be writing about exactly, but I’m sure that it will become clear over time. Much of what’s happening on scanactive.com goes on behind the scenes, and thanks to the generosity of Dan Williams at Ithium I have learned a great deal about web development. Thanks, Dan!

The sun is shining outside and that is where I’m heading next. Stay tuned for more in the near future (yeah, right!). Cheers!
